The future of the ELI super laser centre in Szeged, the largest research infrastructure in Hungary, was the central topic of the meeting in Brussels attended by József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

Hungary’s position paper on the content and strategic directions of the next research, development and innovation framework programme (FP9) to be launched in 2021, prepared with the contribution of a dedicated expert group, was presented in Brussels by József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. The 2014–2020 framework programme of the EU with an original budget of EUR 80 billion is still running with hundreds of calls.

In a new research funding program, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office supports researchers achieving results of high international impact while working in Hungary and accumulating a scientific citation record within the top 5% in their discipline in two years of publication.

In the “Frontline” Research Excellence Programme elaborated and announced for the first time by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, 12 research group leaders have won grants of HUF 150 million to 300 million (nearly EUR 0.5 to 1 million) each, of a total budget of HUF 3 billion, to be spent in the coming five years on creating or expanding their research group and implementing a promising discovery research project in Hungary.

Further calls are to be announced in the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme between 2018 and 2020 which are also expected to further inspire the already outstanding domestic RDI performance, the SME Instrument, the cutting-edge basic research calls of the European Research Council and the “Spreading Excellence” sub-programme.

Eight industry–university consortia partners get the opportunity to implement further promising R&D projects funded from EU and domestic sources in the framework of a programme dedicated to this purpose. The funding programme developed by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office enables the creation of centres based on corporate RDI demand and using the research and development capacity of universities.

More comprehensive data on research, development and innovation (RDI) and information campaigns to raise the innovation-awareness of institutions and enterprises were both on the agenda of the meeting between Gabriella Vukovich, President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) and József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI Office).

As another recent success of domestic SMEs, three Hungarian businesses were nominated among the top 48 projects in the Innovation Radar Prize 2017, one of the most prestigious innovation competitions of the European Commission. In the next two weeks a public vote will decide whether the Hungarian businesses make it to the final hosted by Budapest on 9 November.

Jointly organised by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office with DG for Regional and Urban Policy and DG for Research and Innovation of the Commission, a two-day conference and workshop started on 20 September in Budapest to promote cooperation, consortium building and matchmaking in Industry 4.0 type projects between SMEs, industrial companies and research centres from the Visegrád countries.

The National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office has announced the results of its funding schemes aimed at fostering strategic long-term sustainable cooperation between research institutions and industrial actors.

Over 400 researchers and research projects won more than HUF 11.5 billion (EUR 37.7 million) in funding in this year’s calls aimed at promoting discovery research announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. In 2017 the NRDI Office announced its annual discovery research calls with an increased budget, introducing new funding schemes that are better adapted to researchers’ different career stages. This year 40% of the funds were awarded to researchers under 40 years of age.

Another 69 Hungarian R&D and innovation projects have won funding under the call of “R&D competitiveness and excellence cooperation programmes” within the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme (EDIOP/GINOP).

The “Frontline” excellence programme is open to researchers who belong to the forefront of international scientific life based on their achievements in the past ten years and who exert internationally renowned, outstanding scientific impact in their field of science. Surveys conducted by the NRDI Office show that presently approximately 120 to 150 researchers meet these requirements in the field of discovery research in Hungary.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán opened a cutting-edge laser research facility in Szeged, unique in the world enabling advanced research into the interaction between light and matter at a higher than ever intensity. The second implementation phase of the centre serving research in medical as well as material sciences was funded from a grant of over HUF 40 billion (EUR 130 million), 85% of which was provided from the EU's European Regional Development Fund. Total sum of the investment is HUF 80 billion (EUR 260 million).

The molecular diagnostics of tumour, inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular diseases highly endemic in Hungary, and the development of production and logistics systems essential for industrial operation will be the core focus areas of the two new domestic excellence centres which are among the ten winners in the “Teaming” action, the most prestigious one in the Widening pillar of the Horizon 2020 framework programme.

At the strategic conference called think.BDPST, representatives of the economic, governmental, and scientific spheres discussed break-out points of the region in the fields of digital economy, the transformation of labour market, the education, healthcare, and pharmaceutics.

Calls with increased budgets and with new funding schemes better tailored to researchers’ career stages have been announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office to promote discovery research in Hungary . The total budget of calls for project proposals in the field of fundamental research has increased to HUF 12 billion (EUR 39 million) this year.
