Disbursements to domestic businesses and research centres from the NRDI Fund further increased in 2017
Surpassing disbursements of in 2016, last year HUF 83.3 billion (EUR 273 million) in funding was disbursed from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund to domestic businesses and research centres, and for international RDI cooperation projects and access to research infrastructures.

US observes ELI laser research programme of the European Union as good practice

Szeged-based super laser facility forms part of European Research Infrastructure Consortium to be established with active EU support

Hungary presents suggestions in Brussels on EU RDI funding beyond 2020
Hungary’s position paper on the content and strategic directions of the next research, development and innovation framework programme (FP9) to be launched in 2021, prepared with the contribution of a dedicated expert group, was presented in Brussels by József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. The 2014–2020 framework programme of the EU with an original budget of EUR 80 billion is still running with hundreds of calls.

Four Hungarian researchers won top European grant of EUR 2 million
Two project proposals in neuroscience, one in mathematics and one in political history received the Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). In winning this top European grant, Hungarian researcher Judit Makara was also helped by the “ERC Booster” funding scheme of the NRDI Office.

12 winners in the Frontline excellence programme, funding of nearly ten million euros awarded to cutting-edge, world class discovery research
In the “Frontline” Research Excellence Programme elaborated and announced for the first time by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, 12 research group leaders have won grants of HUF 150 million to 300 million (nearly EUR 0.5 to 1 million) each, of a total budget of HUF 3 billion, to be spent in the coming five years on creating or expanding their research group and implementing a promising discovery research project in Hungary.

Brussels announces 30 billion euro funding programme for research and innovation projects
Further calls are to be announced in the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme between 2018 and 2020 which are also expected to further inspire the already outstanding domestic RDI performance, the SME Instrument, the cutting-edge basic research calls of the European Research Council and the “Spreading Excellence” sub-programme.

RDI scenario analysis and vision: updating the national RDI strategy
As the agency responsible for renewing the national RDI strategy, which determines the domestic RDI vision, the NRDI Office collaborates with the competent ministries and the stakeholders of the domestic RDI system to assess, the domestic and international trends that have emerged since the adoption of the document in 2013, their impact on the implementation and further instruments to improve the competitiveness of RDI activities.

Hungary makes the biggest leap in the region in WEF’s competitiveness ranking

Hungary has significantly improved its position in the global competitiveness ranking of the World Economic Forum (WEF), one of the most prestigious economic rankings in the world. In the overall ranking Hungary has moved to 60 from 69, and in terms of innovation to 62 from 80. Data show improving trends in all main research, development and innovation areas. The report includes positive data relating to institutions involved in basic research, workers focusing on targeted development projects and businesses concentrating on innovation.

Three Hungarian SMEs among top 48 innovators nominated for EU prize
As another recent success of domestic SMEs, three Hungarian businesses were nominated among the top 48 projects in the Innovation Radar Prize 2017, one of the most prestigious innovation competitions of the European Commission. In the next two weeks a public vote will decide whether the Hungarian businesses make it to the final hosted by Budapest on 9 November.

Robot designers and smart factory developers at the Industry 4.0 workshop in Budapest

R&D trends according to preliminary HCSO statistics
The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) has published preliminary statistics for 2016 on the key characteristics of domestic R&D activity: the amount of R&D expenditure and its percentage of the GDP, the expenditure split by source including private and public financing, as well as the number of R&D organisations and researcher headcounts.
