The Luxembourg-based institution, – operating since 1959 – the European Union's Statistical Office produces and publishes statistical analysis and forecasts. With the data provided, it facilitates decision-making of the Community’s institutions. In addition, it discloses information for the international administration and public. In order to ensure comparability, Eurostat tries to standardize, integrate the different national statistical systems.
Eurostat is also responsible for the development of EU-compliant statistical system in the accession countries. Various programs have been initiated within the framework of the cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries, primarily in the scope of Phare program. In Hungary, Eurostat cooperates with the Central Statistical Office, including the nationalization of statistical nomenclatures, taking over common methods and the preparation of a statistical information system.
