Nearly HUF 4 billion will be awarded to around 2,000 winners in the 2021 calls of the New National Excellence Programme. Running successfully since 2016, the programme has already supported more than 10,000 scholarship grantees, said Tamás Schanda, Deputy Minister of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology (ITM).

The main aim of the programme, which is being implemented for the sixth time with the professional support of ITM, is to strengthen the scientific and creative performance of universities by supporting individual excellence and encouraging the development of a new generation of research, development and innovation professionals.

“We are creating opportunities for young people to embark on a career in science and the arts, and encouraging a lasting commitment to their chosen profession. We must shape Hungary’s future together with students, young academics and researchers. The calls for scholarship applications of the New National Excellence Programme support them in their diverse activities, providing predictable conditions for their successful operation”, said Tamás Schanda.

A total of 4285 applications has been received from the 24 higher education institutions participating in the programme for the 2021/2022 academic year. Based on the institutional assessment of the applications, 1872 applicants will be awarded, subject to the approval of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology. In addition to scholarships, the total budget of nearly HUF 4 billion will be used to support the research activities and operation of higher education institutions.
