A brief introduction to the organisation
The democratically organised HÖOK ensures the representation of students’ interests in higher education at national level. In all higher education institutions, student self-governance is not only a legal obligation but also a substantive right to ensure that students’ interests are represented in an appropriate way and at an appropriate level.
The HÖOK carries out educational organisation, social and youth policy tasks for the overall development of higher education in Hungary. To this end, it runs a number of programmes, including three mentoring programmes, in which it feels a special responsibility for Hungarian students from abroad. It has also organised and run numerous national events, such as the Meeting of University and College Students (EFOTT).
The HÖOK is composed of the student unions (HÖK) of universities, which represent the interests of students at local level. HÖKs shape student life according to the needs of students, provides help with academic and social issues, cultural and recreational opportunities and services.
Student unions are represented in the General Assembly, which is the main decision-making body of the HÖOK, in proportion to the number of student seats, including the nine foreign student representatives who are honorary members of the HÖOK. The General Assembly is responsible, among other things, for electing the President and the Board Members. In addition, the institutional HÖK leaders also discuss priority issues in the HÖOK Committee and in regional committees. The student movement develops a united position in the interests of students and makes proposals to the decision-making bodies on the development of higher education.

A brief introduction to the organisation
The Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (SZTNH) is the main government agency responsible for the protection of intellectual property in the economy, science and culture. Its work covers industrial property and copyright, as well as the certification of research and development activities and procedures such as the registration of early-stage (start-up) companies and the companies that support them.
As the predecessor of the SZTNH, the Hungarian Royal Patent Office was established on 1 March 1896, which was the first independent national authority of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and since then its basic task has been the protection of creative Hungarian intellectual works.
In addition to its work as a public authority, the SZTNH is a service office, which means that it offers a range of services to help its clients obtain information before filing a patent application, so that they can decide whether it is worthwhile to embark on a patent procedure that could take several years. In practice, anyone with an idea, a development, or even a logo, a company name, a previously unknown process, written material, a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, etc., that is, intellectual property that they want to protect from being stolen and exploited by others, can contact the SZTNH.
Intellectual property protection has two main parts. Industrial property protection is the legal protection of intellectual works of a technical nature and trademarks. Copyright protects original works of literature, science and art. The Hungarian Intellectual Property Office is the authority that also issues R&D qualifications, which means that if someone is engaged in R&D activities, the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office issues a certificate. This can also be used to claim tax relief and grant money later.
The main objective of the SZTNH is to make more domestic businesses aware of the importance of the various protections. While it is standard practice for large corporations and SMEs in developed countries to protect all the intellectual property they produce, we are losing millions of euros by not doing so. They could lose out on grant money, royalties or even tax breaks.
