In 2020, the NRDI Fund was split into two sub-funds, and in 2022, the National Laboratories Sub-fund was also included.

Innovation Sub-fund:

The Innovation Sub-fund supports business innovation and market-oriented R&D activities, partly carried out in business-academia cooperation. Under the Innovation Sub-fund, international programmes aiming to build international contacts and support joint international research and innovation projects of Hungarian researchers and organisations are announced.

Research Sub-fund:

Under the Research Sub-fund, such innovative and productive calls for proposals are announced that help to provide secure and predictable funding for scientific research. Calls for proposals under the Research Sub-fund are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, early-career post-docs and talented young researchers starting independent research in the years following their post-doctoral period.

National Laboratories Sub-fund:

In 2022, the National Laboratories Sub-fund was also included in the programme strategy. The main objectives of the National Laboratories Programme are to concentrate domestic workshops in a given subject area, to develop competences necessary for addressing major global problems at international level, and to exploit the results of research in social, economic and environmental terms (knowledge transfer). National Laboratories have been set up in four major focus areas – “healthy living”, “safety and security”, “digital transformation of economy and society” and “green transition”.

Missions Sub-fund:

With the amendment of the RDI Act effective from 1 January 2025, a new sub-fund has been established within the NRDI Fund. The primary aim of the Missions Sub-fund of the NRDI Fund is to implement research and development programmes that target the achievement of major societal or economic impacts in strategically important areas..
