The results of the Bolyai+ supplementary call for proposals were announced to mark the end of the period of submissions to the New National Excellence Programme

The New National Excellence Programme (ÚNKP with Hungarian abbreviation), by rewarding excellence in research motivates the most talented young researchers to pursue scientific careers.

In the final round of calls for proposals this year, 58 young lecturers and researchers were awarded scholarships within the framework of the Bolyai+ supplementary calls, thus the total ÚNKP budget of HUF 4 billion for the academic year 2019/2020 provided support to 2061 applicants in 5 categories corresponding to various career phases.

This was the fourth consecutive year since 2016 when calls for proposals have been announced within the New National Excellence Programme. The programme is an important instrument to provide opportunities for the next generation of researchers, it was taken over from the Ministry of Human Capacities by the Ministry for Innovation and Technology and the National Research, Development and Innovation Office in 2019. As in previous years, the ÚNKP provides assistance to students of graduate studies, doctoranduses, young lecturers and researchers who pursue their studies, carry out research in one of the 25 institutions of higher education participating in the programme.

Winning applicants shall be eligible for a scholarship of HUF 50, 000 - 300, 000 as of the next academic year, depending on the category they are in, whereas the institutions of higher education hosting them shall be granted 40% of the amount of scholarship awarded to their own applicants, in the form of research and operational funding. This is a record year in the history of ÚNKP in terms of the number of scholarships awarded: compared to the previous year, 16% more applications were successful and will receive financial support in the academic year 2019/2020. As a result of the four calls for proposals 6700 scholarships have been awarded in total from the budget of ÚNKP.
