Thematic Excellence Programme 2019

Within the framework of the Thematic Excellence Programme, 55 research themes of 26 universities and research institutions will receive around HUF 14.6 billion in funding altogether in 2019.

Strengthening scientific and technological relations with China

Dr Zoltán Birkner, President of the NRDI Office presented the results of the Hungarian–Chinese science and technology (S&T) cooperation on 25 April 2019 in Beijing, at China’s most important international event this year: the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation conference.

New National Excellence Programme calls announced for academic year 2019/2020

Budapest, 06 May 2019 – The New National Excellence Programme (ÚNKP) supports research and artistic excellence in higher education to enhance the scientific performance of universities, raise the next generation of researchers, make scientific careers more attractive, and help the most outstanding teachers and researchers stay in Hungary and stay in science. The ÚNKP calls and all related information are available on a new website launched this year: www.unkp.hu. Deadline for submission is 6 June.

László Palkovics: HUF 90 billion available for RDI in the first half of the year

Budapest, Tuesday 30 April 2019 (MTI) – Intellectual capital-based innovation will play a critical role in the development of the Hungarian economy; the reinforcement of Hungarian research, development and innovation capacities is unavoidable for boosting efficiency and competitiveness – László Palkovics, Minister for Innovation and Technology pointed out this Tuesday at a press conference in Budapest.

Hungarian SMEs are supported from domestic sources to join EUREKA projects

A call for proposals to support Hungarian participation in the international EUREKA cooperation programme is announced again by the NRDI Office. With its budget of HUF 500 million, the call invites project proposals based on trans-border R&D cooperation in any fields of technology, aimed at creating close-to-the-market products, services or processes.

New call for proposals to foster bilateral science and technology (S&T) relations

This year again, the NRDI Office announces a call for proposal to foster bilateral science and technology (S&T) cooperation. As a new feature of the call, Hungarian researchers will be able to launch scientific cooperation not only in relations explicitly specified (namely France and Austria in this year’s call) but also with partner institutions of any European and non-European countries, if the proposal meets high professional standards and the commitment and willingness of the hosting institution is verified.

The first calls of the new RDI system are now open

All in all, aimed at increasing efficiency and competitiveness, the new system of calls for RDI project proposals means a larger budget, more flexible utilisation of funds and reduced administration for applicants. The series of new funding schemes is started with the OTKA research excellence calls announced today by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. The funding of individual and institutional research excellence in the framework of the new system of research funding will significantly strengthen the R&D performance of Hungary.

Innovatively on innovation: SMART conference powered by the NRDI Office

Let’s recalibrate Hungarian innovation! – said Dr Zoltán Birkner, President of the NRDI Office on 2 April 2019 in Akvárium Club Budapest inviting the participants of this year’s SMART conference to engage in constructive cooperation. Organised by IVSZ, the innovation conference aimed to investigate the potential economic, social and biological challenges of – both ongoing and already predictable– technological revolutions, such as artificial intelligence, automation or digitisation.

OTKA research excellence calls soon to be announced with eased terms

This year’s OTKA research excellence calls are going to be announced in the first week of April 2019 by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. In terms of their key parameters, the new calls correspond to the similar types of calls of the previous years. However, it is good news for researchers intending to submit fundamental research proposals that new terms will be introduced to allow a more flexible utilisation of funds and reduce administrative burdens.

Research, development and innovation in Hungary

In its latest publication the NRDI Office sets out to explain to the broadest possible audience the role and relevance of research, development and innovation in enhancing competitiveness. To this end, the publication draws on various sources, including fresh data from Eurostat, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and ERC, to present an objective picture about the current landscape and trends of the domestic RDI sector, also highlighting the most important links.

Over 2800 entrepreneurs contributed to the Hungarian Innovation Forum events

During its five weeks, the NRDI Office’s Hungarian Innovation Forum that ended on 6 March, reached more than 2800 participants at 24 locations across the country plus the capital city, primarily representatives of local SMEs and large companies. The workshops following the plenary presentations were attended by nearly 600 participants to discuss the RDI funding schemes and put forward specific suggestions.

More than 50 institutions submitted funding requests to the Thematic Excellence Programme

The submission period of the Thematic Excellence Programme announced by the NRDI Office was closed at the end of February. Altogether 51 institutions applied for the proposed total budget of HUF 27 billion with a total funding request of around HUF 45 billion. Final information on the funding requests will be available after receipt of all duly signed official documents.

Hungarian Innovation Forum: fourth week of the roadshow

During the last three weeks of the Hungarian Innovation Forum the NRDI Office has met over 1700 participants in 18 cities, primarily the representatives of local SMEs and large companies. In the last week of February the roadshow visits 6 more places then is going to end in Budapest. To maximise the outreach of the consultation, the NRDI Office also launches an online survey in the topic, available from 28 February on its official website.

Call for industrial R&D proposals in Hungarian–Israeli cooperation is open

As of 14 February, the NRDI Office announced its call again for Hungarian–Israeli industrial R&D proposals. The call is aimed to support Hungarian participants engaged in Hungarian-Israeli R&D cooperation projects, wchich will result in new or further developed market-oriented products, processes and services. Deadline for submission is 15 April 2019, 16:00 CET.

Hungarian Innovation Forum kicks off

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology and the National Research, Development and Innovation Office organise a nationwide consultation that involves local and regional businesses, knowledge centres and professional organisations, covering 25 venues from 5 February until 6 March 2019. The nationwide events of the Hungarian Innovation Forum are open to all local and regional stakeholders in research, development and innovation.

National Scientific Student Council is first-time exhibitor at Education Expo

This year, for the first time, the National Scientific Student Council (OTDT) participates as an exhibitor at Educatio International Education Expo, enabling it to provide future students with first-hand information and tailored advice on scientific career paths and attractive career opportunities. The exhibition features many exciting games, interactive exercises and valuable prizes, and lucky visitors will also have the opportunity to take a selfie with a tame owl, the mascot of OTDT.

The NRDI Office’s funding programme promoting the domestic internship of Hungarian students studying in the UK continues in 2019

The National Research, Development and Innovation Office has announced its call promoting the summer internship of Hungarian university students studying in the UK this year as well. In the framework of the call, host institutions can apply for funding from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund to finance the wage costs of interns to be employed by them.

Another round of consultations with the European Commission’s legal service on H2020 researchers’ salaries

The National Research, Development and Innovation Office has devoted special attention from the very beginning to researchers’ salaries in the Horizon 2020 framework programme. Financing competitive researcher salaries from H2020 projects is primarily a challenge for public research centres.
