MAJOSZ automotive conference on the new Zalaegerszeg test track
Industry 4.0 and the latest issues of the automotive industry were at the focus of the 4:PONT:2 conference organised by the Association of Hungarian Vehicle Component Manufacturers (MAJOSZ) under the patronage of Dr. László Palkovics, Minister for Innovation and Technology on 24 September 2019. In the opening session of the professional event held at the conference centre of the ZalaZone Automotive Test Track, Dr. Zoltán Birkner, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office also gave a speech, providing information about the first year of the renewed domestic RDI system and about future policy plans.

New Hungarian-developed IoT framework helps manufacturing companies to go digital
NETvisor Zrt, the Technical and Economic University of Budapest (BME) and CS-Process Mérnöki Kft have successfully closed a joint two-year R&D project with a total cost of HUF 835 million, of which HUF 635 million was provided by the National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI )Office in funding. The new IoT framework developed by the industry–university consortium will enable manufacturing companies to quickly and cost-effectively transform or expand their activities through digitisation and Industry 4.0 solutions.

International smart specialisation cooperation workshop for the development of the food industry through Industry 4.0 and digitisation
Organised by Campden BRI Magyarország Nonprofit Kft, in collaboration with the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, supported by the DG REGIO of the European Commission, and in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Innoskart ICT Cluster, the workshop to be held in Budapest starting on 19 September 2019 focuses on Central European and interregional cooperation promoting smart specialisation in the food industry.

ELTE receives 1.7 billion for three research areas
Eötvös Loránd University has been awarded a HUF 1.7 billion grant in the Thematic Excellence Programme of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office – the President of the NRDI Office and the management of the University announced in a joint press conference. The grant can be spent on in-house research in the fields of synthetic chemistry and biochemistry, high-reliability IT solutions, and family and national community-development.

Record high number of scholarships awarded in the New National Excellence Programme,while applications twice exceeded available funds
Scholarships were awarded again this year to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, doctoral candidates, young academics and researchers in the New National Excellence Programme. The HUF 4 billion budget made it possible to award 13% more scholarships than last year for the upcoming academic year: altogether 2003 applicants received scholarships.

University of Miskolc garners funding from Thematic Excellence Programme
The University of Miskolc has received HUF 400 million in funding for their research aimed at the better exploitation and utilisation of underground natural resources from the Thematic Excellence Programme of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. Zoltán Birkner, President of the NRDI Office told to a press conference in the university on Wednesday: in 2019 around HUF 14.6 billion has been awarded to 26 universities and public research institutions in 55 thematic fields under the Thematic Excellence Programme.

Innovation Ministry: R&D spending grows in the business and higher education sector
Budapest, 12 July 2019 Friday (MTI) – In line with policy expectations, Hungarian stakeholders spent significantly more on research and development in 2018, due to a large part to the implementation of the RDI strategy developed in 2014, the successful higher education policy in recent years, and the large-scale public funding programmes. However, further steps are needed to improve the effectiveness of R&D expenditure – the Ministry for Innovation and Technology highlighted in its communication sent to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI).

Bay Zoltán Research Institute receives funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme
With over two and a half decades of history, Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research is one of the 26 public research institutions and universities which have been selected for funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme this year. New NRDI Office measures set to improve the efficiency of the national innovation system
Hungary ranks 23rd on the European Innovation Scoreboard, making it a moderate innovator among the 28 EU member states. The innovation system thus calls for urgent reform, as the country’s innovation performance has not improved despite the efforts made in the past four years. The comprehensive packages of measures recently introduced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, however, directly aim to boost the innovation potential of businesses as well as to improve the utilisation of research results and cooperation in the innovation ecosystem.

Increased Hungarian participation in Hungarian–Israeli industrial R&D cooperation proposals
Increased number of applications has confirmed the National Research, Development and Innovation Office’s decision to announce its call for industrial research and development proposals implemented in Hungarian–Israeli cooperation with triple budget, i.e. HUF 930 million this year. Although the formal assessment of the project proposals is still underway, it is already apparent that the new scheme attracted more attention: compared to 3-4 project proposals in the previous periods, this time 12 ambitious proposals have been submitted to the NRDI Office.
