Panel of international experts review Hungary’s RDI system

A pre-peer review of the Hungarian RDI system acknowledges the efforts the country has been making to reform its system of RDI funding and urges for a closer cooperation among research institutes, the higher education sector and the business sector. The conclusions of the review were discussed by representatives from the government, universities, research institutes and innovative businesses at a meeting organized by the NRDI Office.

EU funds for RDI are open for applicants from Central Hungary

Two new calls for proposals were announced under the Competitive Central Hungary Operational Programme (VEKOP) to boost the research, development and innovation activities of businesses and to promote the development of an infrastructure that can be competitive in international cooperation schemes.

Consortium-building informational days for ECSEL applicants in Strasbourg

A brokerage event will take place on January 27–28, 2016 in Strasbourg, where potential applicants can learn more about the 2016 round of the “Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership” (ECSEL) calls financed jointly by EU member states. In addition to obtaining information and having an insight in lessons learned from previous calls, attendees will have the opportunity to find consortium partners at the event.

New call for proposals to implement promising business-academic R&D projects

As part of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programmes, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office initiated the implementation of a new funding concept in Hungary in order to drive dynamic collaboration between businesses aiming to work on successful market-oriented development projects and academic institutions with excellent research potential.

Prototype development and commercialization show up ahead

This new call intends to drive commercialization of research results by providing predictable funding to SMEs for the development of technologies with high intellectual value. The call focuses on two development phases that are difficult to be financed from the market, specifically in-house prototype development by SMEs and the commercialization of the resulting innovative products, services and technologies. In addition, the funding will also help improve the competitiveness of SMEs while accelerating their innovation efforts.

Startups Getting in the Ring

A boxing ring was set up in the aula of the Corvinus University of Budapest in the evening of November 26, 2015 to serve as an arena for eight selected startups to compete their ideas in pairs in the Hungarian final of the Get in the Ring global startup challenge. “I trust that these participants will soon be referred to as the members of the great Startup Generation, and the intense support from the fans here will help make it happen because community is the engine of an efficient startup ecosystem”, József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office said in his opening speech.

Front-rank researches: national funds to assist Hungarian researchers win European competitive funding

Hungary has been one of the most successful contestants of the Central & Eastern European region to win competitive funding from the European Research Council (ERC). However, due to lack of funds, the majority of Hungarian projects that were positively evaluated in the process of preliminary selection fail to win funding.

OECD Ministerial Meeting Focused on National Innovation Strategies

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) held a Ministerial-level meeting focused on science, technology and innovation in Daejeon, Republic of Korea, on 19–22 October 2015. The meeting, held in conjunction with the World Science and Technology Forum, was also the first of its kind since 2004.

Increasing researchers’ remuneration is a must, says Pálinkás

Funds to support research and development are abundant now, but there is a lack of ideas and human resources, said József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office speaking on a programme aired by InfoRadio. Increasing the remuneration for those working in the research, academic, development and university sectors is a must, added Pálinkás, who formerly was the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS).

Joint efforts by Slovakia and Hungary to strengthen RDI partnership among the Visegrad countries

Ambassador of Slovakia to Budapest reckons that our countries not only have similar capabilities as neighbours, but show several coinciding aspects in our R&D strategies, therefore it is important to exchange experiences and strengthen our relations. On 12th October, Rastislav Káčer had his first visit in the NRDI Office where President József Pálinkás gave him an overview on the goals and observations of the organisational restructuring launched late last year.

United Arab Emirates seek innovative cooperation with Hungary

Several innovation priorities of the United Arab Emirates coincide with the National Smart Specialisation Strategy of Hungary approved in autumn 2014. European Forum Alpbach on global inequality

4500 registered participants of 86 nations came to Tyrol, Austria, to visit the usual summer European Forum Alpbach. József Pálinkás, President of the Research, Development and Innovation Office contributed too, within the framework of the Technology Symposium of the event with a tradition of 70 years.

European Academies for science-based decisions in policymaking

Even the European Council is supplied with science-based advice by the European Academies Senior Advisory Board (EASAC), the leading body of which met in Strasbourg on 30-31 August 2015. József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office was also invited to the session, as the organisation’s Vice-President re-elected back in 2013.
