On behalf of the National Innovation Office (NIH), senior counsellor Zoltán Fodor participated at the bi-annual meeting of the Hungarian-Flemish Economic Joint Committee organised in Brussels on the 21th February 2013. Our Flemish partner during the discussions was Mr. Philip Van Avermaet, Head of Division for research of the Flemish Department of Economy Science and Innovation.

The full cooperation program signed for 2013- 2014 can be seen on: Cooperation Programme for the years 2013-2014 PDF (6 728 KB)

During the discussions both parties appreciated the results that have been achieved in scientific cooperation between our countries, and agreed that the unlocked influencing of the independent scientific institutes, such as the KU Leuven, would not be beneficial.

In order to define further fields of bilateral scientific cooperation best suiting the research priorities of both countries, the parties agreed to organise a Hungarian- Flemish project-generating workshop, with the participation of scientists and research specialists of both countries. The Flemish partner in the organisation of the event would be the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO), acting as the Flemish funding agency for fundamental research.

During his stay in Belgium, Mr. Fodor also met the Director and Scientific Project Manager of Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI), acting as the Walloon Foreign Ministry, and with whom Hungary is already implementing a co-funded mobility project for scientific research. Before the next call for proposal of a Hungarian- Walloon co-funded mobility project, we should evaluate the funding needs of the existing cooperation between the Hungarian and the Walloon research institutes.

To our demand, the Walloon partner shared the list of research fields which are particularly interesting for the Walloon Government. These are logistics (Transport and Logistics Competitiveness Cluster and Skywin Cluster), Mechanical Engineering (MecaTech Cluster), Green chemistry, durable materials, renewable or recycled materials, together with energy management (GreenWin Cluster), Nutristional research (WagrALIM Cluster) and in the field of biotechnology the research of biomarkers, innovative tools and instrumentation, drug delivery systems, novel therapies, information technology applied to human health, innovative processes and organisational innovations.
