Breakthrough in regulating researchers’ salaries funded from H2020 grants

Financing competitive salaries of researchers from Horizon 2020 grants is a serious challenge to publically financed research centres. In representation of the interests of domestic institutions and in cooperation with the other Member States concerned, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office has urged the European Commission to find a solution to this problem, and finally the accounting rules are now expected to be modified.

Hungary becomes full member in intergovernmental research organisation EMBL

The Hungarian researcher community gains access to Europe’s leading biomolecular infrastructure and further training programmes as Hungary confirmed its intent to join in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), thus becoming the 23rd full member state in the continent’s largest life science organisation.

Kick-off – two winning Hungarian excellence programmes launched

The molecular diagnostics of tumour, inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular diseases highly endemic in Hungary, and the development of production and logistics systems essential for industrial operation will be the core focus areas of the two new domestic excellence centres which are among the ten winners in the “Teaming” action, the most prestigious one in the Widening pillar of the Horizon 2020 framework programme.

The professor of the Alfréd Rényi Research Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences won an ERC Advanced Grant, one of the most prestigious grants of the European Research Council (ERC) supporting discovery research.

Innovative thinkers of the region meet in Budapest

The large-scale innovation forum of the region has been organised for the second time in the Hungarian capital. At the strategic conference called think.BDPST, representatives of the economic, governmental, and scientific spheres discussed break-out points of the region in the fields of digital economy, the transformation of labour market, the education, healthcare, and pharmaceutics.

Round table on the achievements in H2020 by Hungarian companies and the perspectives of running for direct European funds

Szonja Csuzdi, Head of Department of International Affairs of the NRDI Office delivered a presentation at a Budapest conference, on EU funds available also for Hungarian SMEs through direct applications. Industry-researcher consortiums led by businesses in Central Hungary can apply for funding to implement digital production technology innovations, as well as agricultural innovation and biotechnology development programmes within the framework of a new competitiveness call which has a total budget of HUF 17 billion.

Envoy extraordinary for the international utilisation of the ELI laser research centre capacities in Szeged

As the fifth largest EU funded investment in the 2014–2020 programming period, the ELI laser research centre in Szeged is expected to run with full capacity in 2019, connected to two other laser research facilities in the Czech Republic and Romania. Zsolt Fülöp physicist is appointed envoy responsible for conducting the intergovernmental consultations on the organisation of the international consortium and the utilisation of the capacities of the ELI laser research facility in Szeged.

New funding schemes and increased budgets to promote discovery research

Calls with increased budgets and with new funding schemes better tailored to researchers’ career stages have been announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office to promote discovery research in Hungary . The total budget of calls for project proposals in the field of fundamental research has increased to HUF 12 billion (EUR 39 million) this year.

Massive increase in the support disbursed to Hungarian research centres and undertakings from the research, development and innovation fund this year

The support of 276 million EUR (83 billion forints) in total was granted to research centres and undertakings submitting applications to the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund in 2016, a substantially larger amount than in the previous years.

Excellence is the only way to competitive research and innovation

The Hungarian Science Festival and his recent visit to London were both covered when József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office and former President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2008 and 2014, answered the questions of the Origo news portal. Two Hungarian research initiatives among ten European excellence programmes selected for funding

Hungary was the most successful country in the ”Teaming” research excellence programme, the most prestigious call of Horizon 2020 Widening programme. The two successful projects coordinated by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office consisting of excellent Hungarian and international partners have been awarded EUR 26 million (around HUF 8 billion).
