Envoy extraordinary for the international utilisation of the ELI laser research centre capacities in Szeged

As the fifth largest EU funded investment in the 2014–2020 programming period, the ELI laser research centre in Szeged is expected to run with full capacity in 2019, connected to two other laser research facilities in the Czech Republic and Romania. Zsolt Fülöp physicist is appointed envoy responsible for conducting the intergovernmental consultations on the organisation of the international consortium and the utilisation of the capacities of the ELI laser research facility in Szeged.

New funding schemes and increased budgets to promote discovery research

Calls with increased budgets and with new funding schemes better tailored to researchers’ career stages have been announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office to promote discovery research in Hungary . The total budget of calls for project proposals in the field of fundamental research has increased to HUF 12 billion (EUR 39 million) this year.

Massive increase in the support disbursed to Hungarian research centres and undertakings from the research, development and innovation fund this year

The support of 276 million EUR (83 billion forints) in total was granted to research centres and undertakings submitting applications to the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund in 2016, a substantially larger amount than in the previous years.

Call for proposals to establish startup incubators in Central Hungary

The “Innovation Ecosystem” (ÖKO_16) call, which aims to strengthen the environment promoting the foundation, mentoring and training of startup businesses, is now open for applicants from the Central Hungary region with existing or newly planned business incubators.

Excellence is the only way to competitive research and innovation

The Hungarian Science Festival and his recent visit to London were both covered when József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office and former President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2008 and 2014, answered the questions of the Origo news portal. He stated: the only way to improve Hungary’s competitiveness is to have more professionals and R&D experts being excellent on an international scale.

Two Hungarian research initiatives among ten European excellence programmes selected for funding

Hungary was the most successful country in the ”Teaming” research excellence programme, the most prestigious call of Horizon 2020 Widening programme. The two successful projects coordinated by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office consisting of excellent Hungarian and international partners have been awarded EUR 26 million (around HUF 8 billion).

József Pálinkás emphasized the potential of researchers’ excellence to enhance innovation at the University of Cambridge

London, 24 October 2016 – The President of NRDI Office delivered a public lecture on the RDI system in Hungary at the prestigious Clare College of the University of Cambridge. During his visit to London, meeting high ranking government officials and university leaders and in relation to the planned reform of research funding in the UK, Pálinkás also addresses the outcome of the integration of research funding in Hungary completed in 2015.

COST to enhance integration across European research

COST means an excellent opportunity for the Hungarian scientific community, especially for the young, said József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office at the ministerial meeting of the organisation on 22 September 2016 in Bratislava. Many have been given chances to extend their professional connections and exchange knowledge in science and technology. Just in 2015 alone, almost 500 Hungarian researchers participated in 235 COST actions, winning grants more than EUR 600,000 as opposed to the annual membership fee of EUR 6800.

“Hungary has talent!” Review of the Hungarian research and innovation system with recommendations

The Peer Review of the Hungarian research and innovation system based on consultations with Hungarian stakeholders and prepared through a multistage process, was presented by the members of the independent panel of experts at three consecutive events to the representatives of the government, the press and the RDI community. Robert-Jan Smits, Director General of Research and Innovation of the European Commission also participated in the events where the conclusions and recommendations of the document were presented.

EU experts urge enhanced economic utilisation of the considerable domestic scientific and innovation potential and increase of public spending on RDI

The ongoing reform of the domestic research, development and innovation system is acknowledged by the independent experts who, in their recent report made upon the invitation of the EU, also pointed out: further real structural changes can bring benefits to the economy by exploiting Hungarian scientific excellence and the presence of innovative international companies and also by increasing public RDI expenditure in a sustainable way.

Milestone in RDI programme financing

All RDI target groups received substantial funds as a result of the decisions made in the first phase of the application process. Nearly HUF 200 billion (EUR 645 million) EU and Hungarian funds were awarded for research and development and innovation (RDI) in the first evaluation rounds under the calls for proposals announced last year and this year – said József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office at a press talk held in the NRDI Office.

Threefold oversubscription for Hungarian funds promoting corporate research and development

The first submission stage of the call titled VÁLLALATI KFI_16 funded out of the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund was closed on 17 August 2016. The micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and large companies based in Budapest and Pest County are eligible for the HUF 21 billion (EUR 67 million) programme with independent research and development projects. The applicants of the first round applied for funds nearly three times over the total available budget.

Eight candidates of incubator houses to apply for funds to develop startup ecosystem

Eight of the 44 project proposals received an endorsing RDI policy opinion from the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, which is a precondition when applying for the funds of HUF 5 billion (nearly EUR 16 million) under the “Innovation Ecosystem” (EDIOP-2.1.5-15) programme.
