The submission period of the Thematic Excellence Programme announced by the NRDI Office was closed at the end of February. Altogether 51 institutions applied for the proposed total budget of HUF 27 billion with a total funding request of around HUF 45 billion. Final information on the funding requests will be available after receipt of all duly signed official documents.

The primary aim of the Thematic Excellence Programme is to lay the foundations of efficient and successful professional work for higher education institutions, public research centres and the research institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and to create the underlying funding system. The targeted allocation of funds based on professional excellence aims to provide predictable and sustainable financial framework conditions for the institutions.

According to the call for funding requests, the thematic professional programmes of the applicant institutions are required to fit with the following research topics: health, culture and family, secure society and environment, and industry and digitisation.

In the long term, policy makers expect the new scheme to increase the openness of research activities, facilitate cooperation in the RDI sector, promote the utilisation of research results for social, economic and environmental benefits, optimise the use of research capacities, enhance internationalisation, and provide the conditions of a predictable, competitive and attractive career path for researchers in the institutions.
