Full house and stirring encounters in the Budapest final of the Get in the Ring startup competition

This year 70 Central and Eastern European teams applied to participate in the international startup competition, and 16 of them teams made it to the pitch training in Budapest. Based on the votes of the professional jury 8 teams got selected to present their ideas on stage: 3 Hungarian, 2 Romanian, 1 Polish, 1 Austrian and 1 Latvian startup had the opportunity to enter the ring and fight, in front of the audience. Excellent ideas run for the award, such as an anti-counterfeiting technology by the Polish Innovalab, or a Smart City solution developed by 4SmartStreet from Latvia.

Eurostat Releases Its Update of the R&D Intensity Data

Eurostat recently released its update of the R&D intensity data with provisional 2015 figures on R&D spending as a % of GDP. The EU R&D intensity level remains unchanged at 2.04% of GDP.

Commission gives boost to start-ups in Europe

The Initiative brings together a range of existing and new actions to create a more coherent framework to allow start-ups to grow and do business across Europe, in particular:

Improved access to finance: The Commission and the European Investment Bank Group are launching a Pan-European Venture Capital Fund of Funds.
Second chance for entrepreneurs: The Commission has tabled a legislative proposal on insolvency law. It will allow companies in financial difficulties to restructure early on so as to prevent bankruptcy and avoid laying off staff.
Simpler tax filings: The Commission is also working on a range of taxation simplifications including the recent proposal for a Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB).

Second H2020 monitoring report – from the intellectual property aspect

Although many of the projects have not yet produced large numbers of publications and patents as they are still in their very early phases, as preliminary findings, the report shows that there are 1760 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 109 patent applications and 29 awarded patents, which can be attributed to Horizon 2020 so far.

EU funding for research and innovation attracts ever more interest, report shows

In 2015 there was an increase in proposals by 25% compared to 2014, especially coming from businesses, whose number of applications increased by almost 27%.
