In response to the result of the vote on mass immigration held on 9 February 2014, the European Commission had suspended negotiations on Switzerland’s association to the Horizon 2020 package and Switzerland now has the status of a third country.

On 26 September 2014 the Commission will organise a “coordinators’ day” for coordinators of successful proposals. The purpose of the event is to explain the details on the preparation and signature of grant agreements.

SUSCO Budapest is a two-day international conference on sustainable development, and the first in a series of similar events organised by the Antall József Knowledge Centre. The first edition, which is to take place on 2-3 October 2014 at Millenáris in Budapest, will examine sustainable development by summarising its primary objectives and recounting the history of its realisation.

The prosperity of the European Union relies on its ability to provide SMEs and industry with a favourable business environment and customised support to unlock growth opportunities. Stimulating cross-sectoral cooperation and innovation as well as helping SMEs to access finance, new industrial value chains and to go international are seen as key drivers. The potential of clusters and cluster organisations, notably in emerging industries, need to be better exploited to achieve this objective. The question of how to do this and how to team up with others will be at the core of this conference.

In accordance with the previously signed “Cooperation Program for the years 2013- 2014 between the Government of Hungary and the Government of Flanders in implementation of the Cooperation Treaty between the Government of the Republic of Hungary and the Government of Flanders”, a project generating scientific workshop was held in Budapest on June 25 organized by the Flemish Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), the Hungarian Academy of Science (HAS) and the National Innovation Office of Hungary (NIH).

Geneva, 23 June 2014. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world, has started to get ready for its second three-year run. Cool down of the vast machine has already begun in preparation for research to resume early in 2015 following a long technical stop to prepare the machine for running at almost double the energy of run 1. The last LHC magnet interconnection was closed on 18 June 2014 and one sector of 1/8 of the machine has already been cooled to operating temperature. The accelerator chain that supplies the LHC’s particle beams is currently starting up, with beam in the proton synchrotron accelerator last Wednesday for the first time since 2012.

On the 10th of July 2014, the FCH JU will hold an Info-Day in regards to the new Call for Proposals 2014. This will be the first call under the new programme Horizon 2020. The event will occur at the Auditorium Madou in Brussels.

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank Group (EIB) today launched a new generation of EU financial instruments and advisory services to help innovative firms access finance more easily. Over the next seven years, it is expected that the "InnovFin – EU Finance for Innovators" products will make available more than €24 billion of financing for research and innovation (R&I) by small, medium and large companies and the promoters of research infrastructures. This finance is expected to support up to €48 billion of final R&I investments.

The 2nd Scientix Conference will take place 24 – 26 October 2014 in Brussels, Belgium. With the expected participation of around 550 teachers, policymakers, researchers and project managers, it will be one of the major networking events in STEM education in Europe.

The goal of the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI 2) is to develop next generation vaccines, medicines and treatments, such as new antibiotics. It will build on the successes and lessons learnt under IMI. Like IMI, it will bring together companies, universities, public laboratories, innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), patient groups and regulators in collaborative projects that will pave the way for breakthrough vaccines, medicines and treatments to tackle Europe’s growing health challenges, and secure the future international competitiveness of Europe’s pharmaceutical industry.

SASER (Safe & Secure European Routing) is a 80 million Public-Private Partnership project of 58 companies, research organisations, and universities from Germany, France, Finland, Denmark and UK. The project is partly publicly funded by the research ministries/ agencies: BMBF (Germany); DGCIS (France), and TEKES (Finland). The project is run under the EUREKA cluster programme Celtic-Plus.
