Nobel laureate Paul Nurse joins top EU science panel

Commission to boost space research in Framework 9

EU names star panel of innovation advisors
Commissioner Moedas’ plans for a European Innovation Council move a step forward with naming of 15 top investors and entrepreneurs to advise. The Commission said the new panel will advise on the effort targeting breakthrough innovation projects with the potential for scaling up, and also make recommendations for the future role of the EIC from 2021. The group will start meeting in March, and “feed into” another group planning the next Framework Programme for EU R&D.

ERA Progress Report 2016
The European Commission has published the European Research Area (ERA) Progress Report 2016 and Country Snapshots. The country report shows that Hungary is making progress towards achieving the ERA in areas related to access to and transfer of scientific knowledge and international cooperation, however, Hungary’s performance in priority on open labour market for researchers leaves significant room for improvement.

Horizon 2020 coordinators' day on 1 March 2017 in Brussels
On 01 March 2017 the Commission will organise a “coordinators’ day” for coordinators of successful proposals. The purpose of the event is to explain the details on the preparation and signature of grant agreements. This event on Grant Agreement Preparation will also be webstreamed and comes in addition to the one organised on Amendments and Reporting on the 14th February.

EU Prize for Women Innovators 2017
The finalists of the Horizon 2020-funded EU Prize for Women Innovators 2017 have been announced by the European Commission. The shortlist contains twelve outstanding women entrepreneurs who have brought their breakthrough ideas to the market. For the first time, this year's contest includes three finalists in a new category, the Rising Innovator, to recognise excellence in female entrepreneurs aged 30 years or under.

Hungarian winner of H2020 SME Instrument: augmented reality for more aviation safety
As a winning proposal of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2, the Aeroglass project of the Hungarian EU Edge Ltd. develops a smart glass application, which displays key information necessary for pilots during their flight, in real-time and in 3D, without hampering the pilot’s visibility. Around two thirds of aviation accidents are caused by pilot errors, as they have to translate 2D information from the control panel into a 3D environment. With the help of the head-mounted display pilots will be able to make faster and better decisions.
