Robot designers and smart factory developers at the Industry 4.0 workshop in Budapest

Jointly organised by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office with DG for Regional and Urban Policy and DG for Research and Innovation of the Commission, a two-day conference and workshop started on 20 September in Budapest to promote cooperation, consortium building and matchmaking in Industry 4.0 type projects between SMEs, industrial companies and research centres from the Visegrád countries.

Nearly one thousand students listened to lectures given by Nobel Laureates on the synergy of molecular sciences

Research, the desire to understand phenomena, is an activity both exciting and useful – emphasised József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office on the opening day of the Molecular Frontiers Symposium where he was followed by three Nobel Prize winning chemists delivering lectures to nearly one thousand students.

Central European research funding organisations meet in Ljubljana

The heads of research funding organisations from five Central European countries met in Ljubljana on 6-7 September 2017. They agreed to further strengthen the scientific ties in Central Europe, particularly benefiting from a joint rich cultural heritage.

R&D trends according to preliminary HCSO statistics

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) has published preliminary statistics for 2016 on the key characteristics of domestic R&D activity: the amount of R&D expenditure and its percentage of the GDP, the expenditure split by source including private and public financing, as well as the number of R&D organisations and researcher headcounts.

Expanding resources for researchers at all career stages – Funding decisions in 2017 discovery research calls

Over 400 researchers and research projects won more than HUF 11.5 billion (EUR 37.7 million) in funding in this year’s calls aimed at promoting discovery research announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. In 2017 the NRDI Office announced its annual discovery research calls with an increased budget, introducing new funding schemes that are better adapted to researchers’ different career stages. This year 40% of the funds were awarded to researchers under 40 years of age.

Spain shows interest in new laser facility in Szeged

Spain shows interest in joining the international consortium formed to utilise the capacities of the ELI laser research centre in Szeged, Hungary, however, further negotiations are necessary before making any commitment on membership – József Pálinkás said to Hungarian news agency MTI on Friday, summing up the results of his three-day visit to Madrid.

More than a hundred enterprises receive EUR 215 million to launch RDI projects with universities and research centres

Another 69 Hungarian R&D and innovation projects have won funding under the call of “R&D competitiveness and excellence cooperation programmes” within the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme (EDIOP/GINOP).

Hungarian researchers in the regional forefront says Horizon 2020 interim evaluation

Over EUR 140 million in funding has been awarded to Hungarian institutions and businesses so far in Horizon 2020, the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation. On an event organised by the NRDI Office, József Pálinkás highlighted success rates, achievements and forthcoming actions within the H2020 programme, while previous winners and evaluating experts also shared their experience with potential applicants.

“Frontline” call kicks off – The competitive project funding system is now completed with a call promoting internationally competitive excellence in research

The “Frontline” excellence programme is open to researchers who belong to the forefront of international scientific life based on their achievements in the past ten years and who exert internationally renowned, outstanding scientific impact in their field of science. Surveys conducted by the NRDI Office show that presently approximately 120 to 150 researchers meet these requirements in the field of discovery research in Hungary.

EUR 62 million in the first round of the call for proposals to stimulate the RDI activities of businesses in Central Hungary

The call for proposals to develop new, marketable products, services and technologies with significant added value, has been opened to businesses in Budapest and Pest county. In the first period of evaluation, 285 project proposals were submitted with funding requests amounting to HUF 67.5 billion (EUR 220 million).

Applications invited for the post of Director General of the future Hungarian Centre of Excellence

HCEMM Non-profit Zrt. (HCEMM) is a future Hungarian Centre of Excellence for molecular medicine research, services and training. The centre will have its headquarters in Szeged (Hungary) with partner organisations in Debrecen, Budapest, and Szeged. HCEMM seeks an experienced, inspirational and dynamic leader to serve as its first Director General (DG)/CEO.

Three startup incubators to be launched in Central Hungary

Three Central Hungarian incubator projects have been awarded domestic funds of approximately HUF 500 million (EUR 1.6 million) each from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund. The aim of the “Innovation ecosystem” (ÖKO_16) call of the NRDI Office was to reinforce the environment fostering the establishment, mentoring and training of startup businesses.

New laser research facility in Szeged awaits researchers from all over the world

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán opened a cutting-edge laser research facility in Szeged, unique in the world enabling advanced research into the interaction between light and matter at a higher than ever intensity. The second implementation phase of the centre serving research in medical as well as material sciences was funded from a grant of over HUF 40 billion (EUR 130 million), 85% of which was provided from the EU's European Regional Development Fund. Total sum of the investment is HUF 80 billion (EUR 260 million).

Hungary offers EUR 1 million to first-class brains

Excellent researchers who could make great careers anywhere in the world but decide to choose Hungary may receive funding HUF 50 to 60 million (EUR 165,000 to 195,000) per year – shared József Pálinkás in an interview with Portfolio.hu on the new research excellence funding programme.

“We are heading for new directions in brain research”

Neuroscientist László Acsády, winner of an ERC Advanced Grant, the most prestigious grant of the European Research Council fostering discovery research, has set the objective to explore the so far virtually unknown links between the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex – responsible for cognitive functions, movement coordination, speaking and in pathological cases also for epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease – and the thalamus.
