Text mining for chemists – the ChiKEL project, a EUROSTARS success story

A collaboration between two companies in Hungary and the UK has resulted in the inception of the first ever interactive text mining platform for chemists, overcoming difficulties with extracting information about chemicals from scientific literature.

Taking actions in the issues around cost accounting of researcher wages

The proper cost accounting of researcher wages for projects financed under the Horizon 2020 programme is found a major challenge for Hungarian institutions, since regulations regarding the means used to top up salaries became more stringent than in previous framework programmes. Researchers from the Member States of the so-called EU13, which generally win less funding, are hit the hardest by the modified regulation.

Fifteen years of work for credible scientific advice

The European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) celebrated its 15th anniversary on 11 and 12 May, 2016 in Oslo, Norway. Leading scientists attending the event from all over Europe discussed social issues, such as the sustainability of seas, virus research experiments and energy storage, from a scientific perspective.

The submission site of H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships has been opened by the Commission. An information day will be organised on 1 June 2016 by the NRDI Office to present the individual fellowships to Hungarian applicants.

Sustainable RDI system: coordinated utilisation of national and EU funds

Financed from the Structural Funds, the R&D programmes for capacity building provide an excellent opportunity for domestic stakeholders to join internationally competitive projects within the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme – this was one of the conclusions at the “Stairway to Excellence” (S2E) conference held on 24 May in Budapest, organised by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office in cooperation with the European Commission.

EU Innovation Commissioner visits Budapest

Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation and József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office met on April 26, 2016 in Budapest to discuss various topics, including the ongoing independent analysis of the Hungarian RDI system and the roadmap for open science and open innovation, a key topic both in Moedas’ programme and on the agenda of the Dutch EU Presidency. Speaking about H2020 initiatives that have special importance for Hungary, József Pálinkás raised again the cost accounting problems of researchers wages under the framework programme and urged for a deeper investigation into the issue.
