Further HUF 20 billion funding available for innovation by Hungarian companies
Job creation and boosting the competitiveness of Hungary are also served by the PIACI KFI funding scheme (support for market-driven RDI projects) under which applicants may now apply for further HUF 20 billion funding, announced Tamás Schanda. The Deputy Minister and Strategic State Secretary of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology added: this funding is available to businesses, as well as research and knowledge dissemination organisations for developing new products, services and technologies having an export potential.

International cooperation against COVID-19 on Israel's initiative
An online international conference on ministerial level was organised, where the representatives of 18 countries signed the letter of intent entitled “Global Efforts in Fighting the Coronavirus from Research to Practice”. The event was held simultaneously in the cyberspace and in Jerusalem on 15 September 2020 at the initiative of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space of Israel.

Changes in the 2018 and 2019 calls for proposals supporting bilateral S&T cooperation
Travel restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic significantly affect the implementation of projects funded under the bilateral science and technology (S&T) cooperation calls. To assess the impact of the pandemic, the NRDI Office invited 147 affected beneficiaries whose projects are in the implementation stage to participate in an online survey.

The call for market-driven RDI projects attracted much attention this spring, so “we are planning to open it again in September”; the call notice is already on the drafting table – Zoltán Birkner revealed in an interview with Portfolio.hu. The President of the coordinator National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office said that this round would also be fully open, and he also drew attention to their SME Start Innovation call which offers HUF 10 to 20 million for the implementation of good ideas in a simplified application procedure”.

Over HUF 6 billion requested by nearly 400 SMEs in the first stage of the SME START INNOVATION call
More than HUF 6 billion was requested in total by 386 SMEs in the first stage of the SME START INNOVATION call opened in late May and closed on 19 June. In order to ensure continuous access to innovation funds for SMEs, the National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office, with the policy support of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology (ITM), opened the second stage of the call immediately after closing the first one.

Reopened S&T call supports researcher mobility with HUF 200 million in 2020

Information on reopened customer service and restarted on-site inspections
As of 1 July 2020, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office restarted on-site inspections previously suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, as of 15 June 2020, personal administration at the customer service, and personal receipt and inspection of documents are available again.

Institutional research excellence programmes continue in new form - Over HUF 44 billion has been earmarked for the next two years
The former institutional excellence programmes will be integrated into the new Thematic Excellence Programme 2020 (TKP2020), financed from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund with HUF 44.3 billion over the next two-year period – Tamás Schanda, deputy minister of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology announced. The purpose of the new funding system remains the same: to support the professional work of university knowledge centres and research centres in a simplified form, with a focus on research, development and innovation.

New ÚNKP scholarships cover all stages of research careers
This year’s New National Excellence Programme (ÚNKP) calls for applications are now open: the HUF 4 billion budget is available to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, postdoctors, and young teachers and researchers until 30 June 2020. As a novelty, a separate call is dedicated to talented doctoral candidates and postdoctors to ensure that all stages of research careers are supported. This year applications can only be submitted electronically. The calls and related documents are available on the ÚNKP website at www.unkp.gov.hu.

Institutional excellence programmes will continue in 2020
In 2020 the Excellence Programme for Higher Education Institutions (FIKP) and the Thematic Excellence Programme (TKP) will be integrated into a single programme called Thematic Excellence Programme 2020 (TKP2020), financed from the NRDI Fund. The main objective remains the same: to create a funding system for more effective and rewarding professional work in higher education institutions and research institutes by focusing RDI activities in these institutions.

The NRDI Office introduces flexible disbursement rules for advances, simpler administration and a new RDI Hotline channel to support all stakeholders of the domestic innovation ecosystem
Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, applicants, evaluators and financing institutions of pub-licly funded R&D and innovation projects are all facing new challenges. The NRDI Office comes up with eased rules for disbursement of advances to alleviate cash-flow difficulties of ongoing pro-jects and supports beneficiaries of funded proposals with simpler administrative procedures and prolonged submission deadlines.
