Innovation Ministry: R&D spending grows in the business and higher education sector
Budapest, 12 July 2019 Friday (MTI) – In line with policy expectations, Hungarian stakeholders spent significantly more on research and development in 2018, due to a large part to the implementation of the RDI strategy developed in 2014, the successful higher education policy in recent years, and the large-scale public funding programmes. However, further steps are needed to improve the effectiveness of R&D expenditure – the Ministry for Innovation and Technology highlighted in its communication sent to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI).

HUF 45 billion call soon opens for market-driven RDI projects
With a total budget of HUF 45 billion, the highest this year, the new call for proposals of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office aimed at SME and large company innovations and cooperation in R&D, has ramped up anticipations across the country. The online application form is now available in line with the preliminary schedule, and is expected to be open for submissions from 19 July 2019.

Mining and geological service gets funding for data unification

Access to ScienceDirect, Scopus and SciVal open for the Hungarian research community, as EISZ and Elsevier work towards an Open Access pilot agreement
Hungarian Electronic Information Service National Programme (EISZ) and Elsevier, a global information analytics business specializing in science and health, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Letter of Intent, as they move towards finalizing a new innovative pilot agreement for research access and Open Access publishing in Hungary.

Bay Zoltán Research Institute receives funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme
With over two and a half decades of history, Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research is one of the 26 public research institutions and universities which have been selected for funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme this year. The research institute have won altogether HUF 760 million in two thematic areas – announced Ádám Szigeti, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology at a press conference.

New NRDI Office measures set to improve the efficiency of the national innovation system
Hungary ranks 23rd on the European Innovation Scoreboard, making it a moderate innovator among the 28 EU member states. The innovation system thus calls for urgent reform, as the country’s innovation performance has not improved despite the efforts made in the past four years. The comprehensive packages of measures recently introduced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, however, directly aim to boost the innovation potential of businesses as well as to improve the utilisation of research results and cooperation in the innovation ecosystem.

Increased Hungarian participation in Hungarian–Israeli industrial R&D cooperation proposals
Increased number of applications has confirmed the National Research, Development and Innovation Office’s decision to announce its call for industrial research and development proposals implemented in Hungarian–Israeli cooperation with triple budget, i.e. HUF 930 million this year. Although the formal assessment of the project proposals is still underway, it is already apparent that the new scheme attracted more attention: compared to 3-4 project proposals in the previous periods, this time 12 ambitious proposals have been submitted to the NRDI Office.

Fulbright Specialist Program completed to promote the knowledge and technology transfer of Hungarian higher education institutions
In the framework of a Fulbright Specialist Program organised by the NRDI Office between 13-24 May 2019, invited US experts John S. Montgomery and Dr. Beverly A. Lyman presented the activities of the Innovation and Commercialisation Office, Indiana University and delivered a training on how to explore the opportunities related to intellectual property, to boost utilisation, including drawing up business plans, patent applications and licensing agreements.

Call for Applications for the selection of members of the Commission Mission Boards
One of the main novelties of Horizon Europe, the next research and innovation framework programme of the EU is the development and implementation of ambitious missions aiming to deliver a transformative impact for society, the economy, and/or environment, in relation to the challenges faced by European citizens. Conference on funding opportunities in food innovation
Synergies between the food industry and digital technologies have become an increasingly important area in Hungary with a high R&D and economic potential. Many public and private solutions have appeared in the market that provide funding to agricultural and food industry operators for innovation projects. These solutions were reviewed at the Food Industry Innovation Funding Conference organised for the first time on 17 May 2019, which featured speakers such as the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology and the Deputy President of the NRDI Office in addition to market operators, experts and investors.

New call for proposals to foster bilateral science and technology (S&T) relations
This year again, the NRDI Office announces a call for proposal to foster bilateral science and technology (S&T) cooperation. As a new feature of the call, Hungarian researchers will be able to launch scientific cooperation not only in relations explicitly specified (namely France and Austria in this year’s call) but also with partner institutions of any European and non-European countries, if the proposal meets high professional standards and the commitment and willingness of the hosting institution is verified.

The first calls of the new RDI system are now open
All in all, aimed at increasing efficiency and competitiveness, the new system of calls for RDI project proposals means a larger budget, more flexible utilisation of funds and reduced administration for applicants. The series of new funding schemes is started with the OTKA research excellence calls announced today by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. The funding of individual and institutional research excellence in the framework of the new system of research funding will significantly strengthen the R&D performance of Hungary.
