Getting ready for the next EU innovation framework programme, discussions on researchers’ remuneration

For the researcher community working in Hungarian public institutions, it is a key issue to be able to offer competitive salaries to Hungarian researchers from the Horizon 2020 funds won directly from Brussels in an EU-wide competition. It is however difficult because, according to the Horizon 2020 financial regulations, assignment contracts ensuring the competitiveness of researchers’ salaries are not automatically eligible for funding.

“Frontline” call is open again in 2018 to the most excellent researchers

The “Frontline” excellence programme has been announced and offers funding to leading researchers who belong to the forefront of international scientific life based on their performance history of the past ten years and achieved internationally renowned, outstanding scientific results in their field of science. The scheme first announced last year has a similar budget of HUF 3 billion (EUR 9.8 million) in 2018 for projects scheduled to be launched next January.

Hungary has joined the EU Declaration on Artificial Intelligence

In Brussels, József Pálinkás has signed the Declaration of Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence on behalf of Hungary. The Member States wish to cooperate in researching, implementing and regulating artificial intelligence. The Visegrád countries released a separate statement related to the declaration singed by the representatives of several EU countries at the Digital Day on 10 April emphasizing their intention to promote such developments and cooperation with targeted efforts in the future.

Hungary and Korea starts joint programme to foster industrial research projects

The Joint Committee meeting of the Hungarian-Korean Science and Technology cooperation took place on 28 March 2018 in Budapest, where parties agreed to the project based development of their bilateral cooperation and approved a working programme for the coming years. The Korean delegation was led by Chang Whan Ma, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), his Hungarian partner was József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office.

The ELI laser centre in Szeged, S&T cooperation and the innovative opportunities of sustainable development were on the agenda of a meeting in India attended by József Pálinkás

Around 30 Indian researchers attended the ELI workshop in New Delhi organised by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office in collaboration with the ELI-HU Nonprofit Ltd. and the Embassy of Hungary in Delhi. The event was hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology, an active player in laser research.

Innovation calls: funding of EUR 230 million requested

Claims for funding exceeded twice the HUF 10 billion (EUR 32.8 million) budget of the call closed on 12 March, supporting innovation activities of micro and small enterprises from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund. Funding requests submitted to the thematic calls and cooperation programmes announced with a total budget of HUF 31 billion (EUR 101 million), amounted to over HUF 50 billion (EUR 164 million).

Round table of V4 and UK experts on industry–research sector cooperation

The British Embassy and the NRDI Office organised a round table discussion about enhancing cooperation between the industry and research organisations, with the involvement of RDI experts from the Visegrad Four (V4) countries and the UK. The event was opened by Zsolt Monszpart, vice president for innovation and general affairs of the NRDI Office.

600 billion HUF has been pumped into economy already, and that is just the beginning

In the next two years it is inevitable to double the annual budget of the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund by 2020 from the current HUF 83 billion, that is, “the state should contribute the same amount as businesses to the Fund which facilitates research, development and innovation” – József Pálinkás urged in an interview with Portfolio.hu.

NRDIO-HCSO call for accurate provision of statistical data on research, development and innovation expenditure

The Presidents of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI Office) and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) in their joint letter encourage institutions and businesses implementing research and development projects to provide statistical data in compliance with professional standards and in a credible manner.

Information Forum on 2018 RDI calls to promote domestic innovation

Businesses in Hungary have launched 2,000 new research, development and innovation projects since 2015 with domestic and EU funding of HUF 300 billion (EUR 1 billion). Annual funding provided to businesses from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund to promote innovation doubled in 2017 as compared to 2015.

József Pálinkás: EUR 11 million support to the National Quantum Technology Programme

The National Quantum Technology Programme is implemented with the collaboration of academic, university and business research centres and receives a state subsidy of HUF 3.5 billion (EUR 11 million) over a four-year programme period – said József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office on Wednesday at a press conference in Budapest.

Total submitted funding request is EUR 98 million, three times the available budget

The submission stage of the 2018 calls for the discovery research projects and the postdoctoral excellence programme was closed in mid-February. The total funding request under the call for researcher-initiated projects was almost triple than the HUF 9.4 billion (EUR 31 million) budget, with one third of the applicants being young researchers under 40 years of age, whereas the total funding request was twice the available budget of HUF 1.5 billion (EUR 4.9 million) in the postdoc programme.

Norwegian–Hungarian research and innovation conference addresses cooperation between businesses and research groups

Promising new opportunities may arise for Norwegian–Hungarian research cooperation in climate research, machine learning technologies and medicine, including cancer research, which will be the central topic of a two-day conference organised by the National NRDI Office and the Research Council of Norway (NRC) on 15-16 February in Budapest.

First foreign research groups start experiments in Szeged laser centre

Swiss and Greek research groups are the first foreign users of the laser facility in Szeged where laser equipment is already operational. The experiments may lay the foundations for the development of new applications in medicine, biology and pharmaceutical sciences.

Renewed system of calls for discovery research proposals in Hungary

Through increasing resources and new calls announced to support research excellence and projects of researchers below the age of 40, the NRDI Office has delivered on its 2017 promise to renew the system of calls for discovery research proposals – announced József Pálinkás at the RDI Calls Forum on 25 January. Such events are regularly organised by the NRDI Office to improve the quality of research and innovation proposals by sharing assessment experiences.

New NRDI Fund innovation calls with a total budget of EUR 200 million now open

Focus on businesses and practical application

As in the past two years, substantial funds are available for businesses from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund in 2018, totalling at HUF 30 billion (EUR 98 million). Two other funding schemes with a total budget of HUF 31 billion (EUR 101.5 million) aim to stimulate research-industry cooperation to ensure that research results end up in innovative marketable products and technologies in fields such as artificial intelligence, protein research and clean water.

Disbursements to domestic businesses and research centres from the NRDI Fund further increased in 2017

Surpassing disbursements of in 2016, last year HUF 83.3 billion (EUR 273 million) in funding was disbursed from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund to domestic businesses and research centres, and for international RDI cooperation projects and access to research infrastructures.
