In order to provide full range of information to businesses the NRDI Office calls attention to the fact that Hungarian businesses continue to have multiple sources of funding available for their innovative projects.
Though several articles published today warn that the deadlines of two calls for proposals are the last opportunity to win funding, the number of calls for proposals open for projects of SMEs in the area of innovation is significantly higher, and new calls are expected to be published in the near future.

Innovation calls for proposals will continue to be available even after the use of EU funds has been completed, since the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund will publish calls in the area of RDI annually, based on the annual programme strategy adopted by the Government, independent from the EU programming cycle. In 2018 the Office has published calls with a total budget of HUF 30 billion (EUR 98 million) from the NRDI Fund to promote the innovation activities of businesses.

Small businesses also had the opportunity to apply: the new scheme published in January has a budget of HUF 10 billion (EUR 32.5 million) for micro- and small innovation project proposals. 276 applications were submitted by the deadline of 12 March 2018, with a funding request of nearly HUF 20 billion (EUR 65 million).

Cooperation between businesses and research institutes: 48 project proposals with a funding request of HUF 45 billion (EUR 147.5 million) were submitted to the call  Competitiveness and Excellence Cooperations (2018-1.3.1-VKE) by the deadline of 28 February 2018, the total budget available is HUF 26 billion (EUR 85 million). In this scheme HUF 0.5-1.5 billion funding may be granted to projects aiming to meet industrial demand and resulting in commercially viable scientific achievements).

Other open calls for proposals in the area of innovation: the website of the NRDI Office provides information on a source of funding to enhance the international innovation projects of businesses, with a total budget of HUF 750 million, and other open calls for proposals are also available at the following link: Calls for proposals to foster research, development and innovation in Hungary, 2015-2018

  • the Intellectual property rights (GINOP/EDIOP 2.1.3) call is also open to support legal protection procedures of intellectual propperty for businesses, furthermore

In addition to a funding scheme combined with credit, further preferential financial instruments are still available:
  • the Business R&D loan scheme with a total budget of HUF 30 billion (EUR 98 million)
  • as well as venture capital schemes in three calls for proposals totalling HUF 100 billion (EUR 327.5 million).
In addition, innovation funding is available from the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Commission. European researchers, developers in an open, international competition submit as many as 30 thousand project proposals a year to the calls under the research and innovation framework programme.
