Pursuant to the Act LXXVI of 2014 on scientific research, development and innovation (RDI Act) adopted by the National Assembly, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI Office) aims to create a stable institutional framework for the Government coordination and predictable funding of research, development and innovation (RDI) in Hungary, ensuring the efficient and transparent and value-creating use of available resources.

The mission of the NRDI Office is to establish a coordinated, predictable and sustainable system for research funding in which, through supporting excellent scientific research and promoting innovation, Hungary can ensure its RDI resources to be utilised not only in a legitimate but also an expedient manner, to increase Hungary's global competitiveness and foster its most fruitful integration in the European Research Area (ERA).

The NRDI Office aims to reinforce the national innovation system, to foster a dynamic cooperation between scientific centres and enterprises, to create an inspiring environment for innovation.

The Office develops our nation's strategy for scientific research, development and innovation as a policy-maker, manages the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund as a funding agency and represents the Government of Hungary as well as the Hungarian researcher community in international and European RDI organisations.

Our core values

Our tasks

In 2015, a coherent portfolio of competitive calls was implemented by the NRDI Office to facilitate the coordinated, purpose-oriented and value-creating use of RDI funds coming from European sources and the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund. The coordinated calls of the portfolio support scientific research projects, corporate development and the realisation of innovative ideas in a well-balanced manner.

  • strategic planning of calls for proposals, coordinated management of the application procedure, programme evaluation and monitoring system
  • managing the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund and being responsible for the strategic planning of research development and innovation calls financed from EU funds
  • governmental coordination of RDI issues and representation of Hungary in international organisations
  • establishment of innovation services and collaboration platforms, maintenance of databases, preparation of strategic analyses

R&D and innovation proposals submitted to the calls of the NRDI Fund are assessed in a comprehensive, multi-stage evaluation process, along transparent procedures and against a clear set of criteria published in the relevant calls for proposals.

Pursuant to the Government Decree 106/2018. (VI. 15.) on the amendment of certain Government Decrees related to development policy due to the Government being restructured, the 2nd priorities of the EDIOP/GINOP and CCHOP/VEKOP (i.e. research, technology development and innovation) operational programmes are commanded to the political responsibility of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MIT) instead of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office as from 16 June 2018.
