Following the approval of the National Science Policy Council, Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation, announced that under the 2026 call portfolio of the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund (NRDI Fund), approximately HUF 120 billion will be available for research and innovation funding. New calls for proposals may be launched from this amount, and highly successful programmes such as the National Research Excellence Programme and HU-rizon may continue. These programmes serve Hungary’s long-term competitiveness, while continuing to provide balanced incentives for innovative enterprises, outstanding researchers and research institutions, as well as their international collaborations.
The Ministry of Culture and Innovation, the National Research, Development and Innovation Office and the Hungarian Innovation Agency work together as the three most important public catalysts of the Hungarian innovation ecosystem to create a social and economic environment that encourages innovation. Our new joint publication demonstrates the potential of the Hungarian innovation ecosystem, the achievements and ambitious future goals of our key stakeholders in a clear and illustrative way, not only for our current and future partners, but also for the lay public.
Domestic public funding schemes managed by the NRDI Office are financed from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund (hereinafter: NRDI Fund), according to the portfolio of funding schemes set out in the NRDI Fund’s annual programme strategy.
The sustainable growth of Hungary’s economy and the long-term strengthening of its competitiveness can be ensured by innovative ideas resulting in marketable products and technologies with high added value. The government’s strategic goal is for Hungary to emerge as one of the major innovators in Europe and the world by the end of the decade. The key to this is a modern, efficient way of knowledge production and value creation based on research results, innovative ideas and cross-sectoral cooperation, the guidelines and tools of which are outlined in the John von Neumann Programme adopted in 2023.
