The National Research, Development and Innovation (NRDI) Office provides HUF 500 million to enhance Hungarian participation in the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), an EU organisation based in Budapest. EIT KICs bring together Europe’s major industrial, academic and research institutions to address societal challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, food production, health, energy, manufacturing, raw materials and urban mobility.

With more than 2000 partners, the Budapest-based EIT is the largest innovation community of Europe with a wide range of innovation and business development activities: it organises training courses to enhance technical and entrepreneurial skills, provides customised startup and business development services, and manages R&D projects. Through the Innovation Communities (KIC), it stimulates cooperation between industrial, academic and research institutions across Europe to address the most pressing societal challenges. There are currently eight KICs and each focuses on a different societal challenge: climate change, digital transformation, food production, health, energy, manufacturing, raw materials and urban mobility.

The call for proposals recently announced by the NRDI Office aims in particular to help Hungarian partners join and actively participate in EIT KIC activities at the highest possible level, taking on highly complex tasks. The total budget of the call is HUF 500 million which can be awarded for research, education and business development activities. Participation in the diverse networks of EIT has a number of benefits. It helps participants to complete and commercialise their innovative products or services, expand international relations, and use the newly gained experience for successful participation in Horizon Europe calls.
