Mining and geological service gets funding for data unification
The Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary has been awarded HUF 203 billion in funding for developing a unified database in the framework of the Thematic Excellence Programme – Ádám Szigeti, Deputy State Secretary for Innovation of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology said at a press conference in Budapest this Wednesday.

Horizon2020 – Horizon Europe Forum and workshop for assessors about the NRDI Office’s facilitator instruments

Bay Zoltán Research Institute receives funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme
With over two and a half decades of history, Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research is one of the 26 public research institutions and universities which have been selected for funding in the Thematic Excellence Programme this year. The research institute have won altogether HUF 760 million in two thematic areas – announced Ádám Szigeti, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology at a press conference.

New NRDI Office measures set to improve the efficiency of the national innovation system
Hungary ranks 23rd on the European Innovation Scoreboard, making it a moderate innovator among the 28 EU member states. The innovation system thus calls for urgent reform, as the country’s innovation performance has not improved despite the efforts made in the past four years. The comprehensive packages of measures recently introduced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, however, directly aim to boost the innovation potential of businesses as well as to improve the utilisation of research results and cooperation in the innovation ecosystem.

Increased Hungarian participation in Hungarian–Israeli industrial R&D cooperation proposals
Increased number of applications has confirmed the National Research, Development and Innovation Office’s decision to announce its call for industrial research and development proposals implemented in Hungarian–Israeli cooperation with triple budget, i.e. HUF 930 million this year. Although the formal assessment of the project proposals is still underway, it is already apparent that the new scheme attracted more attention: compared to 3-4 project proposals in the previous periods, this time 12 ambitious proposals have been submitted to the NRDI Office.

The first calls of the new RDI system are now open
All in all, aimed at increasing efficiency and competitiveness, the new system of calls for RDI project proposals means a larger budget, more flexible utilisation of funds and reduced administration for applicants. The series of new funding schemes is started with the OTKA research excellence calls announced today by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. The funding of individual and institutional research excellence in the framework of the new system of research funding will significantly strengthen the R&D performance of Hungary.

Nationwide series of consultations on innovation involving domestic businesses and knowledge centres

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology and the National Research, Development and Innovation Office organise a nationwide consultation that involves local and regional businesses, knowledge centres and professional organisations, covering 25 venues from 5 February until 6 March 2019. The roadshow implemented in wide cooperation of the stakeholders includes all the counties of Hungary with the objectives to ground the Hungarian innovation ecosystem being re-organised and to assess the needs relating to the system of RDI calls being renewed.

HUF 12 billion awarded to 400 Hungarian researchers for discovery research
The National Research, Development and Innovation Office supports domestic discovery research with funding schemes adapted to researchers’ different career stages. One third of the funds have been awarded to young researchers who will start their research careers and independent research projects in Hungary. The awarded funds will promote projects and international research programmes aimed at getting a better understanding of natural and social processes, and potentially resulting in the foundation of new methods and procedures.

EUREKA: new German-Hungarian innovation call for businesses
Hungarian businesses may apply for funding for innovation projects implemented in collaboration with research institutions and German partners in the framework of a HUF 750 million (EUR 2.5 million) call for proposals introduced on an information day on 17 April 2018 by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The call, which forms part of the international EUREKA programme, is open until 30 May 2018.

“Frontline” call is open again in 2018 to the most excellent researchers
The “Frontline” excellence programme has been announced and offers funding to leading researchers who belong to the forefront of international scientific life based on their performance history of the past ten years and achieved internationally renowned, outstanding scientific results in their field of science. The scheme first announced last year has a similar budget of HUF 3 billion (EUR 9.8 million) in 2018 for projects scheduled to be launched next January.

Hungary has joined the EU Declaration on Artificial Intelligence
In Brussels, József Pálinkás has signed the Declaration of Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence on behalf of Hungary. The Member States wish to cooperate in researching, implementing and regulating artificial intelligence. The Visegrád countries released a separate statement related to the declaration singed by the representatives of several EU countries at the Digital Day on 10 April emphasizing their intention to promote such developments and cooperation with targeted efforts in the future.

Hungary and Korea starts joint programme to foster industrial research projects
The Joint Committee meeting of the Hungarian-Korean Science and Technology cooperation took place on 28 March 2018 in Budapest, where parties agreed to the project based development of their bilateral cooperation and approved a working programme for the coming years. The Korean delegation was led by Chang Whan Ma, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), his Hungarian partner was József Pálinkás, President of the NRDI Office.

First foreign research groups start experiments in Szeged laser centre

Renewed system of calls for discovery research proposals in Hungary
