Member of the Research Council of Hungary
University Professor, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), the St. Stephen Academy of Sciences, and the Academia Europaea.

Dr. Perczel András, D.Sc.Dr. András Perczel is a structural chemist and biochemist, honoured with the János Bolyai Creative Award and the Széchenyi Prize. His primary research interests include the modelling, synthesis, and structural analysis of biomolecules. His research focuses on gaining a better understanding of the molecular background of type 2 diabetes, amyloidosis, functional amyloids, and proteins associated with certain kidney diseases and cancerous conditions.

Born in Budapest in 1959, he spent his secondary school years in North Africa, where he learned French and became familiar with the mysteries of the Arab world. His formative high school years were spent at the Piarist School in Budapest. He gained early exposure to life by working as a laboratory assistant, manual worker, and conscript in the military. He earned a degree in chemistry (1985) and later a PhD (1989) from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).

His subsequent academic journey took him to Boston, Toronto, and finally Oxford, where he expanded his knowledge in synthetic organic chemistry, molecular modelling, and later NMR spectroscopy. Upon returning to Hungary, he joined the Department of Organic Chemistry at ELTE, where he taught and conducted research as a university professor (2001) and later as the head of the department (2007-2022). He also leads the HunRen-ELTE Protein Modelling Research Group and the ELTE Structural Chemistry and Biology Laboratory. He was elected as a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2010 and as a full member in 2016. He became a member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2012 and the St. Stephen Academy of Sciences in 2019. He has co-authored approximately 300 scientific publications (citation index > 8,500 times, h-index > 46).

He has been married since 1984 to Dr. Dóra Perczel-Forintos, a university professor and clinical psychologist at Semmelweis University. They have three children: Dr. Kristóf Perczel (medical specialist), Dr. Júlia Perczel PhD (art historian and psychologist), and Dr. György Perczel (physician), of whom he is a proud and happy father.
