Autonomous intergovernmental organisation
Promotes high-quality research in molecular biology and biotechnology, with particular regard to the needs of the industrially less-developed regions of the world.
The ICGEB operates three core laboratories in Trieste, Delhi and Cape Town, employing about 700 researchers from over 40 countries. The centre is governed by the Board of Governors, comprising one representative (governor) from each member state.
The ICGEB member countries host associated centres.

Benefits of the membership for Hungary
- Every year, the ICGEB announces a call for cooperative research projects (Collaborative Research Programme – Research Grants), for postdoctoral fellowship positions, and for proposals relating to the organisation of (Postdoctoral fellowships) conferences and training courses (Meetings and Courses). The project managers have to send the proposals to the liaison officers of their country, who are responsible for the national assessment and approval. In addition, the ICGEB also offers short-term PhD fellowships in its own laboratories (Short-term Fellowships).
- between 1988 and 2019 Hungarian research groups received a total funding of USD 1,605,900 for involvement in collaborative research projects (CRP)
- Between 1988 and 2018 altogether 27 Hungarian researchers received USD 684,192 in total in PhD and post-doc grants.
